JCI Bruxelles, a French speaking Belgian chapter, made a partnership with a Belgian NGO, STEP ASBL, in order to promote a petition to the United Nations aimed to change the name of “International Women's Day” to “International Day for Women's Rights”.
Why this petition? /
Poverty rate in Cambodia was 13.5%. About 90% of the poor live in the countryside. Over the past few years, March 8th has been used as a marketing opportunity in the same vein as Valentine's Day or Mother’s Day. We believe that it is necessary to underline the fact that this day is a reminder. A reminder that women's rights continue to be violated around the world, that equality is far from being achieved, and that women continue to face gender-based discrimination daily. There is one day every year on which women can raise awareness among their friends and family about these realities. This day is currently called the "International Women's Day", which has led to the rise of distasteful marketing strategies such as "special discounts" on women's underwear and household appliances. This day should therefore be given the more appropriate name of the "International Day for Women's RIGHTS". Those are the reasons why JCI Bruxelles decided not only to actively support the petition, but also form a small project team helping STEP create awareness and serve as a role model in the type of impact we wish to achieve by changing the day: Create fun and inspiring events and small projects highlighting the gender gap that still exists all over the world.
What are the objectives and how to reach them?
We aim to collect 1,000,000 signatures to be considered by the United Nations. We need support from every JCI chapter to reach it! 1. Use the worldwide JCI network: We’re working on an official endorsement from JCI at a global level, to be able to spread the word to every JCI chapter worldwide and get support through communication on the petition, or by creating partnerships on projects supporting the 5th Sustainable Development Goal. 2. Raise awareness of the project on social media 3. Organize an event on the 8th of September in Brussels on the theme “Does 8th of March have an impact on women’s conditions in Belgium”. This event will start with a drama performance about women’s circumstances and will be followed by a debate.
